“I love Mexico’s colors. They inspire me a lot,” Carolina Herrera said as she described her fondness for Mexico and the reason for attending a gala event in the country’s sprawling capital city Friday.

“I love Mexico’s colors. They inspire me a lot,” Carolina Herrera said as she described her fondness for Mexico and the reason for attending a gala event in the country’s sprawling capital city Friday. “I love Mexico. Its people, its flavors. Everything, but especially its colors and color blends,” which have inspired some of the Venezuelan-American designer’s collections.

Wearing a ruby-red wool dress of her own design, Herrera was the star of a dinner featuring a full House of Herrera fashion show for the first time in North or South America. It started with a reprise of the Carolina Herrera New York spring collection, followed by the spring CH line, a combination only previously seen in Singapore.

Herrera has many fans in Mexico, which is her third-best market. The event was held in the former Claustro Sor Juana convent, one of the colonial gems of Mexico, where CH has five shops and 22 corners at department-store chain El Palacio de Hierro. Sources said Herrera’s owner, Spanish firm Puig, is negotiating a possible launch of CH New York in Saks Fifth Avenue Mexico.

The occasion was timed to promote Mexico City. The metropolis, home to some 30 million people, is striving to position itself as a top Latin American destination for tourism, culture and fashion minutes before the show began, the city broadcast its new TV ad “Mexico City. Live it to Believe it,” featuring its top attractions as enjoyed by a British tourist. American Express, paint firm Comex and the Mexican government were the main sponsors of the event, which earned the Herrera brand 10,000 Instagram followers, a spokeswoman said.

Among the guests were actresses Emily VanCamp and Dianna Agron of “Revenge” and “Glee,” respectively; Dita Von Teese, and Marc Puig. “It was a beautiful show and it was great to see both collections together,” said Von Teese, whose white Herrera dress enhanced her retro style. With DJ Alexandra Richards’ tunes in the background, Von Teese said she likes Mexican cuisine, as well as its staple mezcal and tequila liquors. Earlier in the day, she visited the Frida Kahlo Museum.

Agron also enjoyed her first visit to the Mexican capital. “This is a very live, boisterous and colorful city,” she said, adding that she is a big fan of Herrera’s, who dressed her early in her career. She owns at least 10 of her dresses. “I love Carolina’s work.

It’s so feminine and beautiful.”
