Every year the royal couple honour the Irish Guards as they hold their parade on 17 March which means we get to enjoy even more pictures of Kate wearing a fetching green outfit.
But this year will be different as the event itself isn’t actually happening. And this actually has nothing to do with the global pandemic.
This is because the Irish Guards first battalion are currently deployed in Iraq and South Sudan, so they won’t be holding a parade in the honour of the Royals.
What usually takes place at the annual event is Kate gets to give the guards’ mascot, Irish Wolfhound Domhnall, a pat on the head and of course say cheers with a pint of Guinness, it would be Paddy’s Day without one.
Instead, Kate and William shared a tribute to the Irish Guards on Instagram.
In the lengthy message, they wrote: ‘Happy St Patrick’s Day! In the absence of the annual #StPatricksDay Parade with the @IrishGuards (as the majority of the Regiment are on deployment overseas 🌍), of which The Duke of Cambridge has been Colonel since 2011, we’re sharing more on where the Irish Guards will be working this St Patrick’s Day’.
They explained: ‘The Irish Guards, known affectionately throughout the Army as ‘the Micks’, is an Irish regiment which has proven its loyalty and grit on many tough operations.’
They went on to say that the company is deployed overseas, providing security to the Royal Engineers undertaking construction projects as part of the UN mission there, including teaching basic skills that empower the locals and will help them continue to improve their lives long after the deployment finishes.
While the remainder is currently on a six-month tour focused on training security forces across multiple locations in Iraq and further north in the Kurdish Region.
During the St Patrick’s Day event last year, Kate presented Officers and Warrant Officers with shamrock, while William, who is Colonel of the Regiment, saluted the marchers.
The Duke and Duchess then met with members of the Regiment along with soldiers and their families. The royals also got official Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess photographs.
Thankfully Kate looked very much the Irish caílin last year as she dressed in all green wearing a forest green Alexander McQueen coat that she topped with a matching fascinator.
The Duchess finished off the look with a pair of green tourmaline and green amethyst Kiki McDonough earrings.
Thankfully Kate and Will were able to get in their pint of Guinness in the lead up to St Patrick’s Day during their three-day visit to Ireland.
Not only that, but they also got their dog fix when they went to meet President Michael D.Higgins, Sabina and their doggo Brod so all is not lost.
