Following the death of the African American man, George Floyd, protests have erupted around the world where thousands of people have marched against police brutality and racism. Now Prince Harry and Meghan are getting involved in the movement.
After stepping away from Royal duties this year, the couple have been residing in Los Angeles since the coronavirus lockdown went into place around the world.
But despite the deadly virus delaying plans to launch their new non-profit organisation, the couple have quietly been planning their next moves to support the movement, according to Harper’s Bazaar.
According to Omid Scobie, who has well-placed sources close to Meghan and Harry, the couple have had “meetings behind the scenes with people on all levels” to make sure they are educated and connected with issues such as police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement.
A source said: “Harry and Meghan have been having private conversations with community leaders and people at every level, as well as friends and family, about this issue since the start of recent events.
“By speaking to as many people and organisations as possible, it has been a way for them to feel connected to everything that’s going on and lear more about the issues surrounding it.”
This week, Meghan broke her silence over the death of Mr Floyd in a video to students of her former school, Immaculate Heart High in Los Angeles.
In the video, she described it as “devastating” as she urged people to speak up about their own experiences.
Meghan said: “The only wrong thing to say is to say nothing. Because George Floyd’s life mattered, and Breonna Taylor’s life mattered and Philando Castile’s life mattered, and Tamir Rice’s life mattered.
“And so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we do not know. Stephon Clark, his life mattered.
“And I was thinking about this moment, when I was a sophomore in high school, I was 15 and sophomore year is the year we do volunteer work, which is a pre-requisite for graduating.
“I remember one of my teachers said to me before I was leaving before a day of volunteering, ‘Always remember to put other’s needs above your own fears.'”
The Duchess admitted to feeling nervous at the beginning of the speech and she later apologised to pupils about having to live in a world “where this is still present.
She continued: “I am sorry that we have not got the world to a place that you deserve it to be.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry that you have to grow up in a world where this is still present.
“That’s something you should have an understanding of, but an understanding of as a history lesson, not as your reality.”
She added: “So I am sorry that we have not got the world to a place that you deserve it to be.”
The Duchess of Sussex also recounted her first experience with widespread violence as she discussed her memories of the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
All around the globe people have marched and protested in light of Mr Floyd’s death.
In London, thousands of people gathered for a peaceful protest in Hyde Park and more marched to Downing Street.
In America, riots have ensued with buildings being burnt to the ground and looting.
Last week, US President Donald Trump condemned the behaviour and called for the military to shoot any looters, a comment that has caused outrage around the world.
