The actresses and good friends were honoured with the Legendary Lip Lock popcorn trophy at the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time virtual ceremony on Sunday, so, as a thank you, they decided to re-enact the steamy moment for viewers.
“I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just for the initial shock value but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realise certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are,” Blair, 48, said before the pair locked lips.
“It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture. Also, it was super hot,” 43-year-old Gellar added.
“So as a special thanks,” Selma said. “We’d like to recreate it.”
But seeing it’s 2020, coronavirus protocols put a stop to any exchange on the virtual set.
As the pair leaned in for a kiss, they were met with plexiglass and were instead forced to kiss each other through the barrier.
It was back at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards that the women won Best Kiss for their iconic exchange on Cruel Intentions.
The movie also starred Ryan Phillippe and his now-ex-wife Reese Witherspoon, who plays the virginal Annette that Blair, Gellar and Phillippe’s characters try to sexualise.
