In his interview with W Magazine for its first issue of 2021, Clooney revealed that while he usually cuts his 3-year-old son’s and his own hair, he stays away from Alexander’s twin sister Ella’s tresses.
“I cut [my son’s] hair, and I cut my own hair too, but I’ve always cut my own hair. My hair is like straw,” shared the “Midnight Sky” star, who is featured on one of the covers of the magazine’s “Best Performances issue, which pays tribute to the actors who turned in great performances over the past year.
“I haven’t cut my daughter’s hair. I’d get in trouble if I did. If I screw up my son’s hair, he’ll grow out of it. But my wife would kill me if I touched my daughter’s hair,” the Hollywood star added.
When asked about the device he uses for his DIY haircuts, the 59-year-old actor confirmed that he still uses Flowbee, a vacuum-powered haircutting system from the ’80s.
“It’s got a little suction on it, and then it’s got these trimmers so it pulls your hair up and you cut it. It’s hooked up to its own little vacuum cleaner,” he explained.
It was just last year when Clooney surprised fans by revealing that he had been cutting his own hair for “25 years” using the Flowbee.
Aside from cutting hair, Clooney also shared his “pandemic hobbies.” “I’ll tell you what I’ve taken on as a hobby: two or three loads of laundry a day, dishes all day long, because these kids are slobs,” he laughed. “Apparently, you have to wash your children every once in a while.”
On the work front, Clooney donned several different hats for “The Midnight Sky,” which dropped on Netflix in December. He directed, co-produced and starred in the dystopian space thriller.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clooney shared the difficulties of filming “The Midnight Sky,” in which he plays Augustine, a scientist who thinks he’s the last person on Earth until he finds a young girl.
“To me the beauty of the screenplay was that it’s actually a story of redemption, and it’s very hard when you have a little girl that doesn’t speak to have any dialogue,” Clooney explained.
“It all just sounds like exposition if I’m telling her everything I’m thinking or doing,” he added.
For him, the focus was not on delivering strong lines, thus the team cut out “probably 70 lines that I actually did say just because the more you looked at it, the more I’d go, ‘He wouldn’t say that to her because she can see it.’ So to me it was more about if we’re able to tell a story without much dialogue.”
“That makes for a slower-paced film, and I felt strong enough that that’s the kind of film it has to be. It has to be a film that sits with him and the little girl looking up at Polaris and those kinds of things. You have to let it bake a little bit so that there’s loss and then there’s some redemption along the way,” said Clooney.
