Britney Spears has had a major win in court, with a judge approving her request to hire her own lawyer in her conservatorship battle.

It comes after the singer broke down while delivering a second bombshell testimony in which she unleashed on her father and called for the 13-year arrangement to end.

Britney has been under a conservatorship, which sees decisions about her finances and personal care decided by her dad Jamie Spears since she suffered a mental health breakdown in 2008.

She began the legal process to remove him from handling her personal affairs last year. Last month, Britney told a Los Angeles judge overseeing the arrangement that she wanted to take back control of her own decisions, saying “I just want my life back.”

On Wednesday, she appeared in court again and reportedly broke down in tears as she made another bid for freedom.

“Mam, that’s not abuse, that’s just f****** cruelty,” a tearful Spears told Judge Brenda Penny. “Excuse my language but it’s the truth.”

Spears, who took a short break to compose herself, demanded her father be removed from the conservatorship and be charged with “conservatorship abuse”.

“My dad needs to be removed today,” she said.

It’s understood Britney will now hire former federal prosecutor Mathew S. Rosengart to replace court-appointed lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III, who resigned last week.

Ingham was appointed as counsel in 2008 when a judge declared her unfit to hire her own counsel. Speaking to Sunrise, celebrity lawyer Lisa Bloom said a judge granting Britney the right to hire her own lawyer was a huge win for the star.

“I think it’s going to make a huge difference, her voice is finally going to get heard in that courtroom,” she explained.

“She should be able to fire her own dad and choose whoever she wants to run the conservatorship and hopefully get the conservatorship dissolved entirely which is the ultimate goal.”

Britney’s conservatorship battle has become a global media story in recent months and sparked the #FreeBritney social media movement. Spears and her new lawyer are expected to take her fight for freedom back to court later this year.
