The Australian designer conjured visions of sunny getaways with his wardrobe of crisp summer dresses and easy separates.

“I just want to go somewhere where it’s sunny,” Martin Grant said, staring out the window of his Paris showroom at the unrelenting rain. The month of July hasn’t quite measured up to expectations weather-wise, with the city’s planned post-lockdown celebrations drowned in a perpetual deluge.

A guy can dream. On paper at least, the Australian designer’s spring 2022 collection was perfect for lolling on terraces and skipping down to the beach.

There was a whiff of la dolce vita to his ample cotton summer dresses, in blue and white stripes or watermelon pink, best worn with a belt cinching the waist. Full-sleeved shirts in perforated cotton were paired with an A-line denim skirt or matching wide-legged pants.

For this edited lineup, Grant focused on signature items: a denim trenchcoat with contrasting seams, a polka dot blazer, and a sleeveless linen jumpsuit that all made for great wardrobe building blocks. It’s easy to see why he’s the under-the-radar, go-to designer for everyone from Meghan Markle to Cate Blanchett.

With the pandemic prompting many women to reconsider how they dress, Grant’s upscale but timeless designs seem more relevant than ever: buy less, but buy well. If you don’t get to wear it this summer, there’s always the next and the next.
