Things swiftly escalated when New Jersey police officers approached 20-year-old Emily Weinman on Wildwood Beach. Officers from Wildwood questioned the young lady about alcohol that was unlawfully in her possession and was found nearby. Police were willing to let her go with a warning after she admitted that she and her boyfriend were both underage and took a breathalyzer test. Sadly, she had different ideas.
The bodycam video shows Weinman, who was already on probation in Pennsylvania for a separate violation, acting belligerently and pushing one of the policemen. She continued to kick, beat, and spit at the officer while she resisted being taken into custody, which led to the officer hitting her in an attempt to restrain her.
They’re choking me!” she began to scream, while beachgoers looked on. “You f–king d–k head! Get the f–k off me, yo!” “You’re not allowed to beat me like that!” she complained in the video. “I’m a woman!”
According to The Police Tribune, Weinman was first charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, two charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, and hurling bodily fluids. She pled guilty to a single count of disorderly behavior after the prosecution promised to dismiss all other counts if she did. She was given a year of probation as per her request and told to avoid Wildwood Beach until her term was finished.
Weinman also agreed to refrain from suing the authorities. She quickly filed a federal lawsuit against the city despite admitting guilt, alleging that the arresting cops had “brutally and senselessly assaulted” her. Amazingly, the legal threat was successful, and Weinman was given a sizable compensation.
Unexpectedly, the City of Wildwood made Weinman an offer of $325,000, which she eagerly accepted. She has continued to minimize her criminal activity and disparage the cops who assisted in her arrest notwithstanding the reward.
“When the officers approached me on the beach, I got upset, and I said a few curse words,” Weinman told Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “It really hasn’t been. It’s kind of ruined my reputation. It’s put me down a lot,” she complained. “I go to a lot of places and I get stared at. But I just want people to know that whatever happened that day on the beach on the video, that doesn’t define the kind of person I am.”
Weinman, of course, has not applied her lesson. She also publicly acknowledged her desire to visit Wildwood Beach again in the future.
“It’s not going to keep me away from Wildwood,” Weinman assured reporters, causing her attorney to interrupt and note that she would follow the judge’s order by staying away from Wildwood until her probation period is over. “No contact with Wildwood. She has to stay out of Wildwood,” the lawyer reiterated.
According to the deal, residents will get financial compensation for assaulting police officers and resisting arrest. It also creates a hazardous precedent by informing police officers that they would be penalized for upholding the law.
Weinman broke the law, profited from the court’s clemency, and then promptly sued the city for more damages. Her situation serves as a shining illustration of the severe problems in both our society and the legal system.
