Tourists planning a trip to the Dominican Republic this summer are being urged to think twice, as new warnings from the US State Department highlight rising crime rates and limited law enforcement resources.

A fresh travel advisory posted on June 12 now tells Americans to “exercise increased caution” when visiting the popular Caribbean destination, which was previously classified with a Level 2 advisory. The update follows growing concerns about violent crime in the country, despite increased police presence in tourist areas. According to the US State Department, the situation has become serious enough that visitors should avoid showing off wealth and should be cautious about meeting people they only know online in isolated spots.

The travel advisory system rates countries from Level 1 to Level 4 based on risk. A Level 2 warning, which the Dominican Republic is now under, suggests that travellers need to stay alert, but it’s not an outright ban. However, it’s clear that the situation has worsened, as the advisory previously recommended a general “exercise caution” approach, but now adds the higher-level warning. A Level 3 would suggest “reconsider travel,” and a Level 4 would warn against travel altogether. This updated advisory puts the Dominican Republic in a concerning light for many who are planning a trip there.

“Violent crime is a concern in the Dominican Republic despite more police presence in areas often visited by tourists,” a statement from the department reads. The country has been plagued by high rates of robbery, homicide, and sexual assault, and the report notes that “criminals are rarely caught and prosecuted.” This is adding to the sense of insecurity that many tourists are now feeling, especially as they hear about violent incidents but rarely see justice.

The State Department also encourages tourists to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which keeps them informed about safety issues and provides emergency contact details should they need assistance during their stay. It’s a recommendation that many will now be taking seriously given the sharp rise in criminal activity.

In a security report from December 2024, the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) also painted a grim picture of the Dominican Republic. It highlighted the country’s rising levels of organized crime, including drug trafficking and money laundering. “The wide availability of weapons, the use of drugs, and the developing criminal justice system all contribute to the high level of criminality in the country,” the OSAC report said.

A lack of resources for law enforcement only makes things worse, according to the OSAC. The country struggles with poorly paid and under-trained police officers, and corruption is said to make tackling crime even more difficult. In light of this, many are questioning whether the government is doing enough to address the increasing violence.

With crime rates on the rise and law enforcement stretched thin, the updated travel advisory is not the only sign of trouble. Tourists are now advised to be particularly careful, especially when out at night or in less populated areas, as criminals appear to be targeting more vulnerable visitors.

While the Dominican Republic has long been a go-to destination for sun-seekers and holidaymakers, it now faces serious challenges in securing its reputation as a safe place for tourists. If you’re planning to head there soon, experts suggest you stay informed, take extra precautions, and remain aware of your surroundings at all times.
