There’ll have to be a Little Mix-up of festival planning this summer if awkward ex encounters are to be avoided. Zayn Malik does not want to perform on the same bill as former fiancee Perrie Edwards.
Singer Zayn, 23, was being lined up to appear at Radio 1’s Big Weekend but talks hit a hurdle after it was stipulated he would not appear on the same day as Little Mix.
A source says: “Zayn’s team don’t want it to become ‘a thing’ if the two of them are backstage at the same time. It will take the shine off his performance, because many people would then just talk about his past relationship.
“Zayn and his team really want his solo career to be all about the music.
“Obviously, there are ways to ensure they are kept apart at the site. But once they’re both at the same location on the same day, tongues will wag. And if they were to bump into each other, it would make the whole day awkward.” It comes days after Zayn pulled out of a Radio 1 chat minutes before he was due to go on air, while fans waited outside the studio.
The station’s May bank holiday event in Exeter will feature Coldplay and Ellie Goulding. Zayn called time on his two-year relationship with Perrie in August, months after quitting 1D.
False reports at the time claimed Zayn dumped Perrie, 22, by text but he later insisted he had “more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message”.
He added: “I love her a lot and I always will.”
Zayn has been dating model Gigi Hadid since then, going public by snogging in his video for Pillowtalk. The track is No.1 in the midweeks and should claim the top spot tomorrow.
A spokesman for Zayn said last night: “The information you have is incorrect.”
