Sunshine Landmark Theatre on the Lower East Side, a stone’s throw away from previous music institution CBGB.
Who doesn’t want to be a rock star? Nonetheless, at last night’s screening of director Lenny Abrahamson’s film Frank, it was hard to find someone who wasn’t already or on the road to becoming a music icon. It also helped that the setting was the Sunshine Landmark Theatre on the Lower East Side, a stone’s throw away from previous music institution CBGB.
There, everyone from punk idol Marky Ramone of the Ramones to rockers including Frank Ferrer of Guns N’ Roses came out to see actor Michael Fassbender’s debut in a giant puppet head that sings and dances as the frontman in an eccentric pop band. “The best part was if I didn’t want to go into work, I could send in my double,” joked Fassbender of the contraption he had to wear to shoot the film.
“I think it would have been amazing to be a part of the Pixies,” mused Fassbender’s costar, Maggie Gyllenhaal, in a cascading tea-length Derek Lam dress with fluttering sleeve details, when asked what band she would want to join.
Taking in the film were musicians Kathi Wilcox in a Brooklyn Industries skater dress and Keep sneakers, Kathleen Hanna in a Wacky Wacko top and Jil Sander shoes, and Carla Azar in an avant-garde, yet rock star friendly ensemble of a Vivienne Westwood top and Issey Miyake shorts.
“I’d play with David Bowie,” said Azar who herself drums in the band Autolux. Accompanying Azar was Jack White who chatted away with guests including model (and daughter of musician Annie Lennox) Tali Lennox, Zoë Kravitz, and Dominic West. As the film ended, guests retreated to the Westway and were surprised by a live performance of Fassbender wearing the paper mache topper. Truly the best type of talking head.
