Satu Maaranen is a graduate of Aalto University in Helsinki and currently a freelance designer for the Finnish labels Marimekko and Siloa&Mook. She was originally dedicated to art, and the conversion to fashion only came about later through her interest in shaping stories using the highest of tailoring expertise. Maaranen creates fashion for women that cannot be situated in any particular time or place—mysterious and always slightly avant-garde. The Finn celebrated her first international success in the fashion world this past spring with the ‘Grand Prix du Jury Première Vision’, which was presented on the occasion of the 28th International Fashion and Photography Festival in Hyères. Her creations won over the jury which was filled with luminaries.

Nature as inspiration, the dynamics of water in printing and the play of colours in the surroundings in abstract prints: Satu Maaranen calls her collection “Garment Landscape”, wherein she takes up the challenge of depicting nature in her creations. Colours such as muddy brown, sky blue and forest green contrast with powerful neon tones such as those that can be observed during a clear sunset, and intersect in the guise of hand-painted prints using materials such as cotton or layered silks. The inspiration for the extravagant silhouettes cuts with draping loops and artistic pleats were the masterworks of old in haute couture. The end result sets Satu Maaranen apart as a young and experimental hybrid of haute couture and ready-to-wear.

The focused support of highly skilled new fashion talent is the declared interest of Mercedes-Benz and ELLE. For the fifth time, both brands are together inviting a promising talent to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. In past seasons, much admired newcomers such as Yu Amatsu and his Japanese Label A DEGREE FAHRENHEIT, Steven Tai from Canada, Wang Yutao from China with his label Beautyberry, and the Dutch couture designer Iris van Herpen were highlights of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin.

For the past 17 years, Mercedes-Benz has been present at the most important fashion events in the world and is currently involved in 41 fashion events in 27 countries. With 43 international editions in more than 90 countries, ELLE is the leading fashion magazine in the world. With its particular feel for young design talent and model newcomers, the fashion magazine has proven its extraordinary competence in the world of fashion.
