Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) is most commonly found as a liquid. The magnesium in the liquid can both neutralize excess stomach acid and, if taken in slightly larger doses, act as a saline laxative. But what most people do not know is that it can also work for oily and acne prone skin.
The best known form of milk of magnesia is the chalky-tasting liquid which comes in bottles, such as Phillips milk of magnesia. This liquid is available in the original, non-flavored form or with added flavors such as cherry.
A thick layer of milk of magnesia works as an oil absorbing mask. Spread it on, allow it to dry and rinse off for tighter-feeling oil-free skin. Magnesium is a great oil absorber and soother, and it is a lot less smelly, cumbersome, and hard to wash off than most clay masks. This product is so effective at absorbing oil; a thin layer t can be applied under makeup to reduce shine during the day. Give the bottle a good shake. Then using your fingers, apply a light layer as evenly as possible on your skin, after toning and moisturizing, before concealer and foundation. This takes a little practice; if you get it on too thick you get white powdery residue, but you just have to use a small amount and let it dry. The excess should be wiped away gently before applying makeup. This helps get rid of red, irritated skin and helps dry up acne when you use it overnight. It is better to get the milk of magnesia in original rather than the mint flavor because mint can irritate skin.
Allow it to dry, and you may notice white streaks here and there. Rub with fingers to smooth them out. Dampening your fingers speeds this process along but it’s not really necessary. Allow to dry completely before applying foundation over it. It is a very cheap and effective beauty product.
