When the red carpet mani cam is away, naked nails will play, and it was the absence of color on the tips of actress’ fingers that made the biggest statement with Oscar polish.

Standard pink, blush and all around neutral shades like Essie’s Mademoiselle and Limo-Scene, were the ubiquitous nail color on celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain and Margot Robbie. Even Lady Gaga’s long, oval-shaped nails appeared to be a pale shade of pink— that is, when you could see her fingers from underneath those red dishwashing gloves.
“Nail art is on its way out,” says celebrity manicurist Ashlie Johnson who painted Emma Stone’s nails an opaque pink shade from Chanel called, Secret. “Right now people are going back to traditional, classic tones, but with some shimmer.”
Paltrow’s nails were swiped with a few coats of Essie’s Mademoiselle, which was almost an exact match to her pale pink Ralph & Russo gown. And Robbie had two coats of Essie, the first, a peachy-brown called Perennial Chic and the second, a melon pink color called Back in the Limo.
Johnson also gave Kerry Washington a pale pink manicure using CHANEL Le Vernis Nail Colour in Rose Moire, a blush toned polish, which picked up on the champagne shimmer of her Miu Miu gown.
Celebrity nail stylist Jenna Hipp used Using Chanel “Beige” as a base for Sienna Miller’s mani/pedi, then added a sheer blush pink she’s developing for her own brand , which will be launching later this year. Hipp also gave Zoe Saldana a neutral manicure with a medium coverage nude-pink from her “New Nudes” collection.
And perhaps the most “on-trend” star of the evening was best supporting actress winner, Patricia Arquette, who announced on the red carpet that she skipped getting a manicure all together in order to work on her charity organization.
