We’re nearing the end of 2016, and the year has been peppered with high-profile celebrity breakups.
We’ve seen broken engagements, broken vows, and the splits of both long-term and newer relationships and while we haven’t quite reached 2015 breakup levels yet, we’re still charting the separations of famous couples so far this year. Keep reading to see them all now, then look back at all the breakups that have shocked us the most over time.
1. Ryan Phillippe and Paulina Slagter
The couple ended their engagement after nearly five years together in November. While they have yet to officially comment on the split, the duo had been engaged since December 2015 and were not shy about showing PDA over the course of their romance.
2. Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer
After 9 years of marriage, Tobey and Jennifer, who are parents to 9-year-old daughter Ruby and 7-year-old son Otis, revealed their choice to split in a joint statement to People magazine. “After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple,” they said. “As devoted parents, our first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect, and friendship.”
3. Vanilla Ice and Laura Van Winkle
After nearly 20 years of marriage, Laura filed divorce papers in October, TMZ reports. A source adds that the former couple have actually been separated for a few years now, and she’s just making it official. The rapper was previously arrested for domestic battery in 2001 and 2008. The two tied the knot in 1997 and have two daughters together, Dusti Rain, 18, and KeeLee Breeze, 16.
4. Dakota Fanning and Jamie Strachan
In early October, Town & Country magazine revealed that Dakota split from her longtime boyfriend, Jamie. While it’s unclear what went wrong, Dakota told the publication that she isn’t a fan of dating, adding, “The way I prefer to meet someone is through a friend . . . [They’re] most likely not a freak.”
5. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Fans were thrown for a loop when news broke that Angelina filed for divorce from Brad in September. While the actress cited “irreconcilable differences” as the grounds for the divorce, Brad released a statement of his own to People that read, “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids.” It’s still unclear what went wrong, but a source close to the pair revealed to Us Weekly, that “they fought a lot over the years and disagreed about many things. . . . The fighting got worse and they disagreed a lot about parenting.” The insider also noted that they would “fight over their schedules and politics.”
6. Justin Bieber and Sofia Richie
After a PDA-filled trip to Mexico, Justin and Sofia broke off their six-week-long relationship in mid-September. While it’s unclear what went wrong, a source confirmed to People, “They’re broken up for now.”
7. Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart
Jennifer and her longtime boyfriend split in August. A source told People, “It wasn’t anything dramatic and they were on good terms — it just came to a natural end. They will remain friends and they see each other, but they are not together. It was very amiable.” Jennifer and Casper first met in 2011, when he was a dancer on her tour, and dated on and off since 2012.
8. Brooklyn Beckham and Chloë Grace Moretz
In early September, Chloë and Brooklyn broke up. While they never released a statement, Page Six reported that the two had both been in LA for a few weeks, but didn’t spend any time together. The couple first met in August 2014 at a SoulCycle class but didn’t actually go public with their romance until May of this year, when Chloë made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
9. Mary J. Blige and Kendu Isaacs
In late July, Mary filed for divorce from her husband after 12 years of marriage. While it’s unclear what went wrong, they allegedly cited irreconcilable differences, and Mary requested to withhold spousal support from Kendu and has listed the date of separation as “to be determined.”
10. Kat Dennings and Josh Groban
The 2 Broke Girls star split from her boyfriend of nearly two years in early August. According to an insider, “It was a mutual breakup. They are still friends and care about each other, but it’s not the right time for them now as a couple.” The duo first went public with their relationship at the Beverly Hills Carousel of Hope Ball back in October 2014.
11. Jana Kramer and Mike Caussin
Shortly after the former NFL star checked himself into rehab for unknown reasons, news broke that the duo had separated in August. While Jana and Mike have yet to comment on the news, a source close to the pair told ET that the singer has been “trying to put on a brave face and do what’s best for her daughter. She’s been devastated by this.” The couple first began dating in 2014, and earlier this year, they welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Jolie Rae.
12. Bella Thorne and Gregg Sulkin
After more than a year of dating, the pair ended their love story in mid-August. “After much thought and soul-searching, we have made the difficult decision to end our relationship,” the two said in a joint statement. “We will always love each other and have a deep respect for one another, as we have each grown to be better people because of our time together. Our schedules made seeing each other difficult, and we decided that for now this would be best.”
13. Christie Brinkley and John Mellencamp
The couple called it quits in early August after a year of dating. A rep for the pair told People, “Both the mileage between their homes and their heavy career demands interfered with their ability to maintain the relationship. They vow to remain best friends.”
14. Taylor Kinney and Lady Gaga
Reports broke in July that Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney had ended their relationship after dating for five years. Taylor popped the question on Valentine’s Day last year, so the news came as quite a shock.
15. Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger
Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger’s 10-year-long romance was one of Hollywood’s sweetest, but they broke things off in mid-July 2016. According to reps, “Diane Kruger and Josh Jackson have decided to separate and remain friends.”
16. Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston
Fans were in for quite the shock when Taylor and Tom called it quits in early September. According to sources, Taylor “was the one to put the brakes on the relationship” because “Tom wanted the relationship to be more public than she was comfortable with. Taylor knew the backlash that comes with public displays of affection, but Tom didn’t listen to her concerns when she brought them up.” Now that their relationship is over, Tom is reportedly “embarrassed that their relationship fizzled out.”
17. Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris
The couple officially called it quits at the beginning of June. While many sources cited boredom or jealousy on Calvin Harris’s end, the music producer claimed in a tweet at the time that nothing remained but a “huge amount of love and respect.” Things quickly took a turn for the worse, however, when pictures surfaced of Taylor cuddling up on the beach with Tom Hiddleston.
18. Ariana Grande and Ricky Alvarez
