The coronation of King Charles on May 6th, 2023 was an event watched by millions around the world, and the seating positions and roles played by members of the royal family were scrutinized by many.

Prince Andrew and Prince Harry, who are no longer senior members of the royal family, were seated in positions that set them apart from their relatives, and their absence from official coronation photographs was not surprising.

Prince Andrew, who was fired as a working royal following a sexual assault lawsuit against him, was seated a few rows behind his siblings and other senior royals. Prince Harry, who voluntarily stepped down as a senior royal with his wife Meghan Markle, was seated two rows behind his brother and not among the senior members of the family.

As non-working, nonsenior royals, they were excluded from the official coronation photographs taken at Buckingham Palace following the ceremony at Westminster Abbey. This exclusion was due to the loss of certain privileges that comes with not being a senior royal, such as the use of the His/Her Royal Highness title and the right to stand on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Prince Andrew, who is still one of the Garter Knights, was able to wear his Order of the Garter robes on top of a morning suit to the coronation, but Prince Harry did not wear any regalia. Instead, he wore a dark Christian Dior suit with his Afghanistan and Jubilee medals pinned to his suit jacket, along with a Royal Victorian Order star and neck decoration.

Although Prince Harry reportedly made a 30-minute visit to Buckingham Palace after leaving Westminster Abbey, he was not present for any of the official photographs. The new official photographs were taken by Hugo Burnand, the same photographer who shot Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2005 and featured the new monarch posing in full regalia in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace, holding the Sovereign’s Orb and Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross. The photographs also included Queen Camilla and select members of the royal family, but neither Prince Andrew nor Prince Harry were included.
