Many New Yorkers came out last Thursday night to show their love for Peter Harf, the founder of DKMS (Deutsche Knochen Mark Spenderdatei, German Marrow Donor Program, a.k.a. Delete Blood Cancer), and his co-founding daughter, Katharina Harf, who lost her mother (Peter’s wife) to blood cancer. Together, for the last 25 years, they have tirelessly addressed the public to help saves lives, because they feel that it is their duty. “To us, big love means saving lives,” says Peter. Delete Blood Cancer DKMS is part of the world’s largest network of bone-marrow-and-stem-cell-donor centers, where they assist in finding donor matches from all over the world.

With support of Coty, Inc DKMS celebrated their 10th-year gala at Cipriani Wall Street, marking the 25th anniversary of the foundation, which has more than six million potential donors registered and has, to date, facilitated more than 55,000 transplants around the world. And to celebrate those matched-donor-to-patient moments, some got to meet for the very first time onstage (heart-wrenching!). One of the donors happened to be Chondra Profit, a Broadway singer from The Lion King. She sang her heart out and then met the seven-year-old boy from Brazil who she saved, because she was a match.  As you can imagine, everyone wept with joyful tears.

So, how does it (DKMS) all work? It’s really simple. All you need to do is just get swabbed! Yes, get swabbed at getswabbed.org to determine whether you are a match for a child out there somewhere in the world who is in desperate need of a bone-marrow transplant for survival. Imagine, you can be a real superhero and save a life! So get educated at dkmsamericas. org and register it’s truly so easy. As Katrina Harf stated earlier in the evening, “It’s in your blood to help and save people, so please register.” As DKMS leads the fight against blood cancer by working with families, communities, and organizations, to recruit donors, keep in mind that you too can give someone a second chance at life.
