The couple discussed suffering multiple miscarriages in the second episode of their “I Am Second” series. While the country singer, 37, revealed that she had three miscarriages leading up to son Jacob’s birth in January 2019, this is the first time the NHL pro, 39, has talked about his experience with the devastating losses.
Underwood began the conversation by telling fans that Fisher randomly told her one day that they would have a son named Jacob. She asked him why he would say that, and he told her God told him so.
“I was frustrated,” Fisher said. “We’d had two miscarriages. What’s the future look like? We don’t know. Are we going to adopt?… I was just wrestling and probably the most honest I’d been with God. And I heard, not audibly, but I just sensed that God told me that we were going to have a son, and his name’s Jacob.”
However, Underwood had another miscarriage before finally becoming pregnant with Jacob and when she did become pregnant, she was quick to think that she was suffering another loss.
“I just had an honest conversation with God,” Underwood said through tears. “And I told him how I felt. I was hurt. I was a little angry and, of course, you feel guilty for being mad at your creator. And I told him I needed something. We needed to have a baby or not ever because I couldn’t keep going down that road anymore.”
Her doctors reassured her and soon, Jacob joined their family.
“The story of Jacob is he wrestled with God through the night and he wouldn’t let him go until he got his blessing,” Fisher explained, noting the parallels between the biblical figure and his son.
The couple has been married since 2010 and welcomed their first son Isaiah in 2015.
