Charles was in love with another woman and didn’t have an opportunity to really get to know Diana as they only met a dozen times before he was pressured by his family to marry her; not exactly a fairy-tale scenario.
The way the future king reacted right after he proposed to Diana wasn’t anything out of a storybook either. Read on to find out why his reaction stunned the princess and the cringe-worthy moment that followed.
In the documentary Charles And Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding, royal experts dove into the details of Charles’ marriage proposal to Diana that the princess had spoken about years earlier.
Diana revealed that the prince brought up that she may be queen one day and she told him how much she loved him before he popped the question.
Royal author Ingrid Seward said that it was at Windsor Castle where the heir apparent asked for his then 19-year-old girlfriend’s hand in marriage, and when he proposed Diana started laughing.
“She burst out laughing, I think that was probably her nerves, ” Seward opined, adding, “She didn’t think it was the most romantic of proposals but she had the proposal.”
Diana accepted of course but how Charles reacted when she said “yes” stunned her.
Royal biographer Christopher Wilson talked about how what the prince did next certainly wasn’t what Diana was expecting.
What followed were no hugs, tears of joy, or any type of celebration instead Charles simply picked up the phone and called his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, to say it was done.
“He didn’t pick her up in her arms and embrace or do any of the things we might do when we propose marriage to the one that we love,” Wilson explained. “He rang his mum, simply to say there, I’ve done it now. You’ve asked me to get married to somebody and I’ve fixed it.”
Wilson added, “What he’d done was he’d finally found a wife.”
After that proposal, the Prince of Wales and his bride-to-be did a joint interview and Charles managed to surprise Diana again when the interviewer asked if they were in love.
“Of course,” Diana responded, before Charles added, “Whatever ‘in love’ means.”
Diana recalled that moment years later and revealed what she thought of the prince’s response.
“That threw me completely,” she admitted. “It absolutely traumatized me.”
The prince and princess divorced in 1996. Diana died from her injuries sustained in a car crash the following year. In 2005, Charles married Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
