Princess Diana was a protective mom to Prince William and Prince Harry. One tabloid claimed that she wanted his firstborn to take over the throne instead of her ex-husband Prince Charles. The outlet also alleged that it was the late Princess of Wales’ dying wish.
In Touch published a report claiming that Princess Diana wanted Prince William to be the next king after Queen Elizabeth II. It quoted an insider claiming, “it was her dying wish.”
The tabloid also cited Princess Diana’s infamous Panorama interview when she shockingly said the Prince of Wales shouldn’t become king. The outlet continued saying it was bad news for Prince Charles, who already has major insecurities about his popularity compared to his firstborn son.
The press loves Prince William more than Prince Charles probably because of the latter’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. The heir apparent was allegedly worried that his late wife’s wish would come true. The article concluded that it could be Princess Diana’s “revenge from the grave.”
Gossip Cop examined the claim and refuted it. Apparently, the article was promoting a new documentary from Channel 4 entitled Diana: The Truth Behind the Interview. In the original interview, Martin Bashier asked Princess Diana if she wants Prince William to be king.
“You have to see that William’s very young at the moment, so do you want a burden like that to be put on his shoulders at such an age? SoI can’t answer the question,” the late princess said.
When Bashir pressed Princess Diana for more, she added that she hoped her “husband finds peace of mind.”
Gossip Cop also noted that it wasn’t Princess Diana’s dying wish. When the royal got into a fatal car crash in Paris with her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, her last words were, “My God, what’s happened?” There was no time for Princess Diana to make a dying wish.
Moreover, Gossip Cop pointed out that Princess Diana had no power to choose who should the heir be. The line of succession was already established, and popularity doesn’t count.
Prince Charles is set to be the next monarch, and he has to wait until Queen Elizabeth II dies because she promised to serve the monarchy until her last breath.
There are also rumors that Queen Elizabeth II will skip Prince Charles and hand the throne to Prince William. The same report is not true. Even the Queen has no authority to choose her rightful heir.
