A few years ago, British tabloids were focusing on Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, and diving deep on the relationship between the two.
Meghan decided to sue the tabloid ‘The Mail’ after they published an article making specific claims depicting a relationship between the father and daughter that many other publications ran with.
It was only recently that court records showed released text messages between Prince Harry and Meghan to her father that completely flips the narrative many have thought to believe was true.
The Duchess of Sussex shared previously unseen text messages that she and Prince Harry had sent her father in an attempt to help him and discuss any issues privately. Thomas was known for speaking to the press on multiple occasions, revealing a certain narrative that did not paint either Meghan or Harry in a great light.
However, Meghan’s legal team released the text messages which completely change what the general public thought they knew about the relationship, contradicting what Thomas had said previously.
According to the royal editor of ‘Harper’s Bazaar’ Omid Scobie, the key claims which were stated in the reply from Duchess Meghan’s lawyers included that “The Mail harassed, humiliated and manipulated Thomas, despite repeated requests to leave him alone,” and also “Rather than report on the dispute between Meghan and Thomas, the Mail contributed towards it.”
Meghan is suing for invasion of privacy after the 2018 article in question included portions of a private letter that she had sent to her father.
Many may remember that Thomas was intended to walk his daughter down the aisle at the royal wedding, however, he pulled out at the last minute due to heart problems.
Thomas took to the media to then accuse the pair of writing him off, and not inquiring about his health from that point forward. Yet, through the series of text messages released, we now know that both Meghan and Harry attempted to reach out to Thomas multiple times prior to the wedding.
One text sent from Prince Harry read, “Tom, Harry again! Really need to speak to u. U do not need to apologize (sic), we understand the circumstances but ‘going public’ will only make the situation worse.”
Then another text which went unanswered read, “If u love Meg and want to make it right please call me as there are two other options which don’t involve u having to speak to the media, who incidentally created this whole situation. So please call me so I can explain. Meg and I are not angry, we just need to speak to u.
Thanks.” Even Meghan sent a long text message on May 15, that read, “I’ve been reaching out to you all weekend but you’re not taking any of our calls or replying to any texts…Very concerned about your health and safety and have taken every measure to protect you but not sure what more we can do if you don’t respond…
Do you need help? Can we send the security team down again? I’m very sorry to hear you’re in the hospital but need you to please get in touch with us….What hospital are you at?” No comment yet from Thomas about the released messages.
