Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, raised eyebrows with the suggestion that the couple were married in secret three days before the ceremonial extravaganza broadcast around the world.
However, Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury and the man who married them, addressed the issue publicly for the first time, saying that wasn’t the case and that the big royal wedding on May 19, 2018, was, in fact, the real one.
“I signed the wedding certificate, which is a legal document, and I would have committed a serious criminal offence if I signed it knowing it was false,” Welby said, confirming the actual date.
Harry and Meghan’s representatives, contacted by email, declined to immediately comment on the record after Welby’s comments were published.
“They (the royal family) are born into it and one of the things, with the great privilege of meeting some of them, that I’m most aware of is their sheer sense of duty and commitment, which means they know this is a life sentence,” Welby stated
“Even if they decided to withdraw from public life and never take any money and disappear, they would still be pursued because they’d be the ex-you know Duke of Rock or whatever,” he stated.
