Speaking to GQ, the ‘Peaches’ singer shared the reality of his drug dependency in the earlier days of his career, admitting that his security guards would come check his pulse in the middle of the night to make sure he was still alive.
Bieber spoke freely to GQ, revealing how his relationship with God and his marriage have changed him for the better, but it was his candidness towards the difficult times in his life that was particularly refreshing. In discussing what his life would have looked like if the pandemic had happened five years ago when he was at his darkest, the singer shared, “I think it would have probably resulted in just a lot of doing drugs and being posted up, to be honest.”
He also spoke plainly about the pain he was in just a few short years ago, particularly about the drug use and the place it stemmed from. “There was a sense of still yearning for more,” he says now. “It was like I had all this success and it was still like: I’m still sad, and I’m still in pain. And I still have these unresolved issues.
And I thought all the success was going to make everything good. And so for me, the drugs were a numbing agent to just continue to get through.” This was the time in his life when his security team would check in on him at night to find his pulse–a time which he describes as rock bottom where he lost the trajectory of his career.
However, nowadays Bieber is doing much better and says that he has his wife and faith in God to thank for that. His drug use has been tempered after taking the proper time to work through his pain, and he shared that he is both physically and emotionally much healthier than he has ever been before.
While he shared that he does still suffer from Lyme disease, he’s put many of his emotional burdens behind him. Bieber just released his new album ‘Justice’ in March, followed by the EP ‘Freedom’ which came out in April. He’s been busy!
