David Beckham seems to have landed in the firing line of Liam Gallagher, who let loose with a colorful outburst about the ex-footballer’s potential knighthood.

The Oasis frontman, never one to hold back, made it clear he’s not exactly thrilled about the idea of Beckham becoming “Sir David,” just as whispers started swirling that King Charles might finally hand him the honour.

Gallagher’s timing was no accident. Over the weekend, reports emerged that Beckham, now 50, could be among the names on King Charles’ upcoming birthday honours list. While many welcomed the idea, Gallagher took to Twitter/X with his signature bluntness and said: “Don’t know what all the fuss is about receiving a knighthood and being called SIR, all my teachers in school were called SIR and they were all massive C***S, dya get me bruv LG x.”

Naturally, fans didn’t hold back either. While some agreed with the sentiment, others cheekily suggested it’s time Gallagher himself got the royal treatment. One fan posted: “Sir Liam Gallagher of Manchester sounds kinda good though, right?” Another chimed in: “Sir Liam Gallagher. Sounds wrong. Feels right. Let’s make it happen!” Someone else summed it up perfectly: “This is why you can’t leave Twitter.”

Beckham, for his part, hasn’t said a word in response. But there’s been plenty of chatter suggesting his long wait for a knighthood could finally be coming to an end. The football icon, who earned 115 caps for England, was first given an OBE back in 2003 and was reportedly put forward for a knighthood as early as 2011.

He’s also struck up a close bond with King Charles in recent years. Just last month at the Chelsea Flower Show, the King noticed Beckham wearing the monarch’s rose in his lapel and commented, “You got it, didn’t you?” Beckham replied: “It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind.”

The rumours started gaining serious traction after Beckham and Victoria were seen attending a state banquet for the Emir of Qatar at Buckingham Palace last December. And last June, Sir Rod Stewart even had a bit of fun with the football star at a palace do, joking that the knighthood was “coming soon.” As Sir Rod later explained, “Someone has to lighten the atmosphere in the room, you know – he’s a good sport.”

But all that excitement might now be at risk. There are reports that because news of Beckham’s possible knighthood was leaked ahead of time, the whole thing could be in jeopardy. The official announcements are usually made through The Gazette, the UK’s public record for honours and other government notices.

A source told the Mirror: “David’s long-awaited knighthood could be on the ropes after the news leaked.” So while fans may have been ready to toast “Sir David,” the slip-up might mean he’s back to waiting once again.
