Meghan Markle and Harry face ‘tough time’ paying for security due to coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic means the couple could lose out on a significant amount of money, according to royal expert Omid Scobie who says it will “be a tough couple of months” for them.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will struggle to pay for their security bill in the coronavirus crisis as they lose out on a “significant amount” of income, according to a royal expert.

The former senior members of the Royal Family stepped back officially on March 31, and now live in California in the middle of the pandemic.

Their decision to step back means they are free to earn independently.

But royal commentator, Omid Scobie said in the Heir Pod podcast it will be hard to cover costs for their security.

The expert said: “They have spent the last few years not earning a living.

“As a royal, your expenses are covered but you don’t earn a salary. It will be very tough for them especially in the few months ahead.

“No-one knows when there is an end date to this. This could follow us for some time.

“For Harry and Meghan, on top of the difficulties they have had with the press, there has been this underlying issue of who pays for security moving forward.

“It is something the couple were very conscious of, that from March 31 it would have to be done by themselves.

“They didn’t want to leave themselves open to further attacks.”

It was revealed last week the United States will not pay for the security protection of the couple and their son Archie.

Duke and Duchess of Sussex will have to pay for their own security after they moved from Canada to California, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter.

He wrote: “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom.

“It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S.

“However, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”
