Meghan Markle and Prince Harry decided to step down from their royal duties last year. They wish to be financially independent from the royals and to live a quiet life. But many are wondering why they are still in the spotlight.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry allegedly prefer to be a celebrity
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been working for a living. However, according to Graham Smith, CEO of anti-monarchist organization Republic, the Sussexes only left their royal duties to live on their own terms like celebrities.
“It is very clear that they wanted to be celebrities and they wanted to do it on their own terms,” he said.
“They were not prepared to do things that the public and the Government expected of them such as keeping their opinions to themselves. They were not prepared to put up with the sort of criticism that they have got. They wanted the life of a carefully managed celebrity rather than a royal who is, even in a less than ideal way, open to scrutiny and challenge.”
He also added that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were “desperate to stay in the spotlight.” However, they want to do it in their own way. Unfortunately, Smith felt that the interest in the couple is waning over the years after they walked away from being royals.
Sussexes less popular after Megxit
Several might agree with Smith’s observation about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s popularity. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were featured in the Special Edition Walkers Shortbread treats. The sweets were offered for £16 a tin at London’s Harrods and Selfridges, but it didn’t sell out. So, the treats were downgraded to £3.99 at bargain store TJ Maxx.
Prince Harry and Markle’s teabag markings from their royal wedding in 2018 are still available. The items have been sold at half-price £4.
Ingrid Seward, the editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, also shared the same observations. According to her, she wants to feature the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in her magazine cover. However, the people have stopped buying items with the Sussexes, so she has since stopped featuring them on the cover.
Seward found it weird and interesting at the same time why the magazines featuring Prince Harry and Markle on the covers weren’t selling.
