The Sussex couple is currently holed up in Tyler Perry’s £18 million mansion in Malibu with their young son Archie amid the current coronavirus lockdown. While their move across the pond came as a shock to royal fans, columnist Katie Nicholl has said their move to the states was “inevitable”, as they had planned on living an “international” lifestyle from the beginning stages of their romance.
She told Australian website 9Honey: “I was told from a very early stage in their courtship, they had told a friend of Harry’s that Meghan met quite early on that they wanted to international roving royals and that was going to be their focus.”
The revelation from Ms Nicholl comes after other reports that Prince Harry was feeling “a bit rudderless” without a job or friends in Los Angeles.
A source told Vanity Fair: “Harry has been on lots of conference calls and has been very busy keeping in touch with friends and colleagues.
“He is keeping up regular communication with all of the organisations he works with at home in the UK.
“This is a very strange time for us all, but I think Harry is missing having a structure to his life right now.
“He doesn’t have friends in L.A. like Meghan and he doesn’t have a job.”
Last week Harry recorded a video message to mark what would have been the Opening Ceremony for the Invictus Games Netherlands.
He told former servicemen and women: “I hope that all of those in the Invictus family are coping well and supporting each other through this challenging time.”
Since leaving the UK, Harry has been forced to relinquish his roles as Captain General Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant, RAF Homington and Commodore-in-Chief, Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command.
It is said that the duke has struggled to believe what has happened, and is missing his roles in the Army.
A source told the Telegraph: “He has been telling friends that he still can’t believe this has happened. He can’t believe his life has been turned upside down.
“He was in a happy place when he was serving in the Army, then he met Meghan and since then life has been great. But I don’t think he foresaw things turning out quite as they did.
“Of course he doesn’t blame Meghan. There is just a sense that he might have been better protected if he was still in the Army.” The source added.
In Harry’s ten year military career he served two tours of Afghanistan and relished his time with them.
Quitting the army was a “tough decision” for the prince as he enjoyed the normalcy that it brought to his life.
Harry previously said: “I’m one of the guys. I don’t get treated any differently.”
Back in 2014, the prince launched the highly successful Invictus Games, as an opportunity for wounded or sick armed forces members as a chance to take part in a Paralympic Games type tournament.
Looking back on his military career, Harry said: “From learning the hard way to stay onside with my Colour Sergeant at Sandhurst, to the incredible people I served with during two tours in Afghanistan.
“The experiences I have had over the last 10 years will stay with me for the rest of my life.
“For that, I will always be hugely grateful,” added the prince.
His military superiors have hailed Harry as an “exemplary soldier” for his efforts in Afghanistan, where he has been stationed twice.
