The world was shocked by the news the Duchess and Prince Harry have moved to Canada together with their son, Archie. Some have wondered: Is Meghan’s mother going to join them?
Here is what’s been more recently reported about the duchess’ relationship with her mother, Doria Ragland.
Meghan’s mother hasn’t received as much press coverage as other members of the duchess’ family. Predictably, she isn’t as famous as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William, or other members of the royal family.
She also hasn’t received as much attention as Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, and her half-sister, Samantha Markle. This is likely because, unlike Thomas and Samantha, Ragland hasn’t criticized her daughter in the media.
In fact, Fox News reports Ragland has not publicly commented on Megxit at all, neither supporting or critiquing her daughter’s decision. What does this mean? Is Meghan closer to her than to other members of the Markle family? Would the duchess like her mother to move to Canada?
According to Fox News, Meghan actually isn’t very close to her mother and Ragland has no plans to move to Canada. Instead, Ragland is going to continue giving yoga lessons to her clients in Los Angeles.
Fox News’ source says the distance between Meghan and her mother existed before Meghan became the Duchess of Sussex. The source says when Meghan was a cast member of the show Suits, she would only see her mother once or twice yearly.
OK Magazine has a similar narrative regarding Meghan and her mother. A source quoted by the magazine says “She’s not very close with her mom.” The magazine quotes another source which says Ragland “has no plans to relocate to Canada or anywhere for that matter.
Perhaps Ragland will relocate. Even if she chooses to remain in Los Angeles, it won’t necessarily mean she’s emotionally distant from her daughter. Fox News says Ragland is 63 years old. Perhaps she isn’t interested in relocating and giving up her lifestyle at this point.
Megan’s every word and every action has been analyzed to death. Despite this, the media has never gotten Meghan or her mother to speak about their reported emotional distance from each other.
In an age of social media, 24 hour news cycles, and rapid communication, this is nothing short of a miracle. In a small way, the Duchess of Sussex has retained some privacy.
