Mia Threapleton opens up about not having social media accounts in a candid interview

Mia Threapleton, daughter of Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet, is opening up about the reasons behind her decision to live a life entirely free from social media—and how her famous mother played a crucial role in shaping that path.

In a recent interview with ELLE magazine, the 24-year-old actress revealed that she has never had any social media accounts and doesn’t plan on creating them in the future.

“People say, ‘Oh, well done,’ to not having it, but I’ve never had it, so I don’t really know what the ‘Well done’ is for,” Mia said, reflecting on others’ reactions to her offline lifestyle.

She explained her reasoning in a refreshingly grounded way, telling the magazine, “I don’t want it. I don’t want to worry about dropping my phone out of a tree if I’m climbing one because I’m trying to take a photo of something.”

The Firebrand actress also shared how observing her mother’s intense public scrutiny—particularly following the massive success of Titanic, shaped her understanding of fame, privacy, and self-image. One early lesson from Winslet stood out, particularly when Mia was struggling with body confidence as a young girl.

“My mom said, ‘No, this is strong. So many people would love to be able to swim the length of the pool the way you do — think of it as a positive thing,’” Mia recalled, describing a moment when she felt insecure about showing her shoulders while swimming.

The powerful message left a lasting impression, encouraging Mia to view her body with strength and gratitude instead of judgment—a perspective she continues to carry.

This is not the first time Mia has spoken about her mother’s influence on her approach to digital life. In a May 17 interview with The Times, she revealed that at the age of 14, she was asked by her mother to write a list of pros and cons before joining Instagram.

“The cons completely outweighed the pros for me,” Mia noted. “That was quite a clarifying moment. Since then, the more time I spend in this world, the more I’m really happy that I don’t have it.”

As her acting career begins to rise, Mia Threapleton stands as a rare voice among Gen Z performers—choosing to navigate fame on her own terms, far from filters, likes, and followers, guided by lessons rooted in authenticity and self-worth.
