Noah got candid about her childhood experience growing up in the shadow of her older sister Miley in her new EP “The End of Everything.” In one part of the song, she describes the contrast between her and Miley.
“My sister’s like sunshine, bringing good light wherever she’ll go/ and I was born to rain clouds, blessed in her shadows,” Noah sings.
On Saturday, during an Instagram Live, she explained more details about the song and even got emotional when she reflected on the criticisms she received when she was younger.
“I think just the message in the second verse, being born in the family I was in, everyone gave me such a hard time for having a hard time being Miley’s little sister,” Noah explained (via People).
“But you know, I always felt like I was that person that no one gave a [explicit] about due to what people said to me online. It was absolutely unbearable. And that’s why I write, ‘My sister’s like sunshine, bringing good light wherever she’ll go/and I was born to rain clouds, blessed in her shadows.’ Because, that’s why everybody always says to me, that no matter what, I was going to be in that shadow.”
Noah added that it was what she heard her whole life every single day and she thought she would stay that way forever because it was difficult for her to overcome. She added that she decided to share it because it was a huge part of her life and she might not talk about it after the song.
“I probably won’t talk about it anymore. I just wanted to put it out,” Noah said.
“Everybody always says you’re giving the people power by seeing it, but I can’t control seeing it,” she continued tearfully. “You guys are young, you know the internet. It’s been really tough on me, so that song is just pretty tough to get through.”
In 2017, Miley told ABC News that her sister was sweet, compassionate and respectful. She also asked the public to not judge her or be too harsh on her. The “Malibu” singer said she wasn’t worried about her sister, but she was concerned for the people who could be hateful and harsh toward her younger sibling.
As for Noah, Miley advised her to disable the comments section of her Instagram account and to never Google herself or read anything that other people say about her.
