New Yorkers 'insulted' by appointment of pop star Taylor Swift as city's Global Welcome Ambassador

Taylor Swift is riding on a high at the moment. With her new album, a fancy new title from New York’s tourism agency, and THOSE amazing legs, life can’t get any better for everyone’s favourite pop starlet. But, it seems, not everyone is so thrilled about Miss Swift being named New York’s Global Welcome Ambassador.

Perhaps it’s because she only moved to the city earlier this year, or because she’s rarely seen riding the subway, but some native New Yorkers have reportedly been left ‘incensed’ by the decision – including Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider.

The heavy metal singer told the New York Daily News: "She doesn’t have any life experience here, or connection to the town." The 24-year-old superstar has been handed the really posh-sounding title from NYC & Company – the city’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organisation.

Her new job will include encouraging people to visit the Big Apple, and of course belting out some tunes about it. Taylor grew up in Pennsylvania but moved to Nashville, Tennessee when she was a teenager. Earlier this year she moved to a penthouse in Lower Manhattan and is so in love with the city she even made a song about it.

"There’s so many others – Jerry Seinfeld, for instance, if you want a big name," Dee added. "But Taylor Swift is the pop culture queen, so she moves into town, and she’s the ambassador."

Speaking about the I Knew You Were Trouble singer, Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company, said: "New York City is a truly welcoming city, and ‘Welcome to New York’ perfectly exemplifies the unrivalled hospitality, energy and excitement that can be felt throughout all five boroughs.

"We are pleased to work with Taylor Swift to welcome visitors from around the world, as she was welcomed this year, and couldn’t have asked for a better synergy between Taylor and NYC & Company to tell our story about what makes New York City, New York City."
