During an interview with “7News Spotlight,” Samantha shared her thoughts on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s recent claim of being involved in a “near catastrophic” two-hour car chase with paparazzi in New York City on May 16, following their attendance at the Women of Vision Awards.
Expressing her skepticism about the incident, the author of “Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister” suggested that the couple’s portrayal seemed dramatic and reminiscent of the tragic events surrounding Princess Diana’s fatal car crash in Paris in 1997, which involved paparazzi pursuit.
“My first question was, a divine ‘near catastrophic’ chase? And it takes two hours to cover just two blocks in Manhattan with your car barely moving,” Samantha stated. “So, I thought it was a lot of drama, and it seemed to remind me of this repeated invocation of the Diana tragedy. It appears to be their golden ticket.”
Samantha further alleged that the couple had exaggerated their encounters with paparazzi in their Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” released in December 2022.
She claimed, “Even in the Netflix series, they were sitting in the front of a car, and my sister was looking around, saying, ‘Do you see that pap on the bike?’ Harry asked, ‘Where is he?’ Then the camera shot showed one guy on a bike. He didn’t have a camera, and there was nobody else around. But they were supposed to be in a heightened state of paranoia as the paparazzi were following them. Nobody was following them.”
During the interview, “7News Spotlight” also presented a clip of New York City Mayor Eric Adams downplaying the incident during a May 17 press conference, stating, “I would find it hard to believe that there was a two-hour high-speed chase.”
Samantha took a veiled swipe at the couple and Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, who was with them on the night of May 16, remarking, “If anything was scary to the public, it would have been that Doria’s makeup was melting.”
Describing the entire ordeal as an alleged “PR stunt,” Samantha expressed her concern about the couple repeatedly invoking Princess Diana and using her memory for financial gain, suggesting they should allow her to rest.
When asked if Meghan had reached out to her family since the April 30 interview on 7News, in which her father Thomas Markle Sr. pleaded for reconciliation, Samantha claimed that the former “Suits” star had not made any contact.
“No,” Samantha asserted. “And here’s the thing, I think my father, like King Charles, is always extending the olive branch, even though the responsibility to mend the relationship is not solely on them.”
“In my personal opinion, you can only make concessions so many times before it reaches a point where you’re not just extending an olive branch and showing love, but enabling,” she added, referring to Thomas, who suffered a stroke last year.
Meghan has been estranged from her family for several years. During her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, only her mother was present, as her father had withdrawn from attending due to health issues.
