“Basically, the song is saying, ‘I want a boyfriend.’ And so obviously, it’s centered around me going around and seeing these guys,” Gomez explains as scenes from the finished music video play.
“But I pull up to this dry cleaner’s and get this potion from these cool girls. Clearly, it’s, like, a love sort of potion. And I go on these dates with three different guys.” As she walked towards set for her one of her “dates” she jokes to the camera, “I’m on The Bachelorette. I’m going on my next date.”
“Date number 3 was for sure a success,” Gomez continued. “It actually feels like dating. I’m so engaged in what he was saying that I kept messing up the lyrics as I was…because I was talking to him.”
At the end of the ‘Boyfriend’ music video, Gomez turns her dates into toads. Instead of opting for CGI toads, Gomez replaced her human co-stars with three amphibian ones.
In the behind-the-scenes footage, the director tries to instruct the pop star to plant a smooch on her new co-stars. “I’m not going to kiss it!” she says as she tries to hold one without freaking out. These screenshots from the video really say it all:
After a few freaks out, Gomez eventually came around on the toads. “It was so cool. I’ve never held a toad. And, I think it’s, like, people are so scared of them because of the texture, but they’re actually so sweet,” she shared. At one point, she even said she wished she could take one home with her.
