According to Star, Cruise and Reese Witherspoon have both expressed their dismay towards the award-giving body because they have always fought for inclusivity.
“Being away from Hollywood has given Tom a serious opportunity to reflect on the movie business as a whole. He sees this as an opportunity to speak on behalf of his peers. The fact that he’s stepping forward is a huge deal,” the source said.
Reese Witherspoon, Tom Cruise shade Golden Globes
Witherspoon, on the other hand, has made it her mission to empower women through her production company, Hello Sunshine. So, the actress speaking up about the issue wasn’t much of a surprise.
“It wasn’t always easy for Reese to pave new ground, and she certainly ruffled a few feathers along the way. Everyone would agree it’s been a win-win for her career. Her popularity is at an all-time high and she’s seen far and wide as someone who can really do it all – with her approach towards equal rights being a big part of her empire,” the source said.
Scarlett Johansson shades HFPA
Scarlett Johansson also slammed the HFPA after revealing that some members harassed her.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Johansson revealed that she faced sexist questions while promoting some of her films.
“It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences. The HFPA is an organization that was legitimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition and the industry followed suit. Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole,” she said.
Johansson’s co-star, Mark Ruffalo also slammed the organization.
“Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past. Honestly, as a recent winner of a Golden Globe, I cannot feel proud or happy about being a recipient of this award,” he said on Twitter.
