Now that Rihanna has secured the VMA Vanguard Award for 2016, the race is already on for who will nab MTV’s highest honor in the next year! has learned that enemies Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are head to head in the running, but they have some stiff competition! Though we are only a day removed from this years VMA Awards, there has already been rumblings on who they would want to receive next years Vanguard Award and five names have jumped out as current front-runners.
Those people are all women and they are Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson. Obviously there is tons of time til they have to lock things down, but these ladies are currently on the list,” a source tells. Wow, that’s some serious female firepower on that wish list, and we’re sure all of the women would love to follow in the footsteps of Rihanna, 28, Beyonce, 34, and Britney Spears, 34, in receiving the honor. While they’re all worthy, there are reasons why a few of these names may stick out more than others.
Obviously Katy and Taylor would be total shoe-in’s with their many thrilling videos, but since Katy-Kat will have a new album out chock full of new songs and amazing vids to accompany them when the 2017 VMAs roll around, she might the most timely choice. Plus, her music videos for all of her career have been EPIC! Taylor is just starting to work on the follow-up to 1989 so the folks at MTV might hold off and let her have it in another year when she’s more on the radar.
Lady Gaga would be a fascinating choice, and her videos have always been amazing. But she needs to deliver a new album full of hits and she’s been out of that business in recent years. Her last major album Artpop back in 2013 only really delivered “Applause” as a big single. Besides, she seems to be more focused on her acting career than her status as a pop icon these days.
While we love Kelly and Christina, it doesn’t seem to be either of their times. Christina hasn’t had a hit album in years and her main claim to fame has been as a judge on The Voice. Kelly on the other hand has been side-tracked with motherhood, having babies back to back. We’re totally dying for some new music from her, but she hasn’t put out enough new videos in recent years to make us think she could take down the likes of mighty Katy. She’s SO talented and she’ll totally have her year, we just doubt it will be in 2017.
