The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have reportedly stepped in and are now leading the monarchy. In fact, they had “dramatic first days as king and queen,” New Idea reported.
Prince William and Middleton are expected to lead the monarchy while the United Kingdom is on lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have relocated to Windsor Castle. Meanwhile, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles are also self-isolating especially after the Prince of Wales tested positive for coronavirus.
The publication noted that the Queen has stepped down from her official duties and public appearances and handed the reins to the third-in-line to the throne, Prince William, and his wife, Middleton. The report added that in the past days, the two have proven themselves worthy as de facto king and queen of England.
“Obviously Kate and William have a very important role to play,” royal expert Phil Dampier said of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. “They are going to be the only visible royals – the face of the royal family.”
The Cambridges’ ascension to the throne came at a time when the people held them in high regard and after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle turned their backs from the royal family.
Prince William’s speech addressing the coronavirus was taken as an indication that he would be leading the monarchy because he was the first senior royal to speak about the pandemic. On the same day, Prince William and Middleton visited the London Ambulance Service 111 Control Room and the NHS Service in Croydon to thank the frontliners for their dedication.
“They hopefully appeal more than the Queen to a younger generation, a lot of whom possibly aren’t taking in how serious coronavirus is,” Dampier added.
“People look up to them and they’ll bring strength and support. William has already done one video message and I think that’s possibly the way forward. They’re not going to take any unnecessary risks but will do as much as they can.”
