The Britannia Awards, given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles, broadcast in the United States for the first time on TV Guide Network.
BAFTA was founded in 1947 as the British Film Academy, by David Lean, Alexander Korda, Carol Reed, Charles Laughton, Roger Manvell and other leading figures in the British film industry.
In 1958, the Academy merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors to form the Society of Film and Television, which eventually became the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1976.
The Britannia Awards honors those who have made an outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry in the U.S. and Great Britain. This year’s recipients include Jeff Bridges (Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film); Michael Sheen (British Artist of the Year); Christopher Nolan (John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing); and Betty White (Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy).
Other recipients include Tony and Ridley Scott, who accept an award recognizing the outstanding contribution of their company Scott Free Productions, Michael Sheen as British Artist of the Year, and Golden Girls actress Betty White become the second recipient of the Charlie Chaplin Award for Excellence in Comedy.
