It wasn’t your typical party venue in Chelsea last night as Chanel transformed a raw space into a Moulin Rouge–esque environment complete with painted backdrop, oversize N°5 and double-C logos, and waiters doling out coupes of champagne. Runway regulars including Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, and Laura Love joined Poppy Delevingne and fashionable New Yorkers including China Chow and the Brant brothers in toasting director Baz Luhrmann on his latest film, The One That I Want, starring Gisele Bündchen and celebrating the house’s signature fragrance, N°5.

However, with every guest dressed in their finest bouclé, we wanted to know what the fashion set’s first piece from the house was. “It was a white camellia,” said Academy Award–winning costume designer Catherine Martin, while nearby Lauren Santo Domingo, in Chanel, added, “It was a trench coat with tweed lining that I got at a sample sale.” Ready-to-wear? Not a handbag? “I never owned a 2.55 in my life,” admitted Santo Domingo, “I missed that milestone!”

Others were all about slinging a bag over their shoulder though. “It was a 2.55 with a silver chain,” said singer Lily Allen. What color? “In black, obviously!” exclaimed the pop star. “It was something stolen from my mom,” joked model Gigi Hadid, “it was a vintage backpack that she bought for herself when she was a model.” Inherited items also proved to be a trend as Leigh Lezark in a pop art–colored Chanel jumpsuit added, “It was a bag that my grandmother had,” before Audrey Gelman in a black, sculptural dress from the house said, “My grandmother has an extensive collection, and I inherited a pair of quilted ballet flats.”

As cocktails winded down, Kloss chatted with Amy Astley before explaining that her first item from the house was the reason we were all there. “It was a perfume before I got my first paycheck,” she joked. “After I got it, it was a bag, it’s my baby, and I’ll have it forever.”

As guests slipped into the darkness of the space, they emerged into a clublike atmosphere replete with booth and bench seating, a stage, and candlelights. As they sipped on carafes of vodka, they ate twice-baked potatoes with a generous dusting of black caviar, and the director took to the stage to introduce his latest work. “I always do a lot of research,” said Luhrmann on the process of working with Chanel, Lagerfeld, and Bündchen, “and spent a lot of time with Gisele on her life.” The film, with a soundtrack from artist Lo-Fang, captures the power, beauty, and strength of modern femininity which Luhrmann said recalls the ethos and spirit of Coco. After two more decadent courses, Lo-Fang performed a mini-concert while guests including Anya Ziourova, Toni Garrn, and Lily Donaldson danced as if they’d been transported to a Parisian nightclub.
