Befitting the theme of “China: Through the Looking Glass,†Doyers Street was where New York City’s first Chinese language theater once stood.
“A crazy street, and there has never been any excuse for it.” That’s Herbert Asbury describing Doyers Street, a crooked, 200-feet-long slice of Chinatown that has served up more noirish dealings than a Hammett novel.
Befitting the theme of “China: Through the Looking Glass,” Doyers Street was where New York City’s first Chinese language theater once stood, and befitting our stomachs, it is where you can still find Nom Wah Tea Parlor, the storied dim sum house where Vogue rang in Met Gala festivities Saturday night in cinematic fashion with soup dumplings, silks, sparklers, and a late-night lion dance parade.
