As planes roared overhead, it was Jennifer Lopez, unsurprisingly, who made the biggest ruckus on the red carpet at the 31st MTV Video Music Awards, held Sunday at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. She rocked a predictably skintight, cut-right-to-there silver sequin and nude mesh illusion dress by an otherwise unheard of (at least before tonight) designer called Charbel Zoe.

La Lopez was truly working as in, doing interviews all the way down the long red carpet while most of the big stars ditched after the first few interview spots. Most of the questions she fielded were about the much-publicized fall Iggy Azalea took during a performance at a benefit concert Friday night.

“We had shot our video that day and night (a remix of their duet “Booty”); I think she was just exhausted,” explained Lopez. At least she did manage to credit her dress as well.

And while Lopez is in a position to boost small designers like Zoe, the rest of the music pack went for marquee names Iggy Azalea in Atelier Versace (a name Lopez helped put on the mainstream map when she wore the now-famous plunging green and blue Versace to the 2000 Grammy Awards); Chloe Grace Moretz in Louis Vuitton; Lorde in Chanel; Nick Jonas in Vivienne Westwood; Rita Ora in Donna Karan; Demi Lovato in Lanvin.

Jeremy Scott came to support his girls, as he put it, "Rita, Iggy, Miley, Gwen, Katy,” and dressed Ariana Grande in “supersexy logomania” Moschino.

This is where everyone lets their freak flag fly," he said of the looks. "If (the fashion at VMAs) is a perfume, this is the purest notes, because everyone has such great personalities so if they can just be wild, there’s no judgment of that. It’s expected.”
