On July 22 2013, the news that the world had been waiting for was finally announced – the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were the proud parents of a baby boy.
With confirmation of her labour coming early that morning, London was already buzzing with well-wishers eager to be part of a moment in history. At Buckingham Palace, crowds grew throughout the day; despite temperatures reaching the hottest of the year to date; keen to spot the easel that would announce the birth to the public. At St Mary’s Hospital, the press who had been camped out for weeks sweltered in the heat as they patiently awaited news.
At 8.30pm news of the birth was announced and set off a flurry of celebrations around the world. The London Eye flashed red, white and blue, while the BT Tower carried an illuminated announcement proclaiming "It’s a boy!" In Canada both Niagara Falls and Toronto’s CN Tower lit up blue.
As the Prince of Cambridge woke to his first day, his parents faces graced every newspaper cover in the country; save for a couple where his grandfather Prince Charles made an appearance. The birth was marked with gun salutes at the Tower of London and Green Park, while the bells rang out at Westminster Abbey.
The Duke and Duchess finally left the hospital with their new arrival just after 7pm and posed for photos before speaking briefly with the press. While Catherine admitted to feeling "emotional", William revealed he had already changed his first nappy and that his little boy had "a good pair of lungs on him".
