Gucci Spring 2022 Ready To Wear Collection

Monochromatic outfits are not news. In fact, the return of head-to-toe hues can be traced back to fall 2016 when brands like Gucci and Loewe sent outfits in aqua, pink, and purple shades down their runways.

In 2021, monochrome seemed to be getting more and more passé, still wearable but nothing to write home about, until recent spring 2022, runways quickly reinstated monochromatic outfits as a high fashion styling trick. From Max Mara to Courrèges, Versace to Blumarine, Chloé to MSGM, the most recent runways proved that wearing a full monochromatic look strikes just the right note.

A bevy of designers all went in on monochrome, dreaming up one-hued wonders that felt fresh with unexpected silhouettes. Take MSGM’s baggy low-rise jeans paired with a cropped hoodie and blazer—all in a tennis ball neon. Or consider Chloé’s low-key knit skirt and tank paired with a same-hued marigold coat.

Designers struck a perfect balance between understated silhouettes and exciting color to make monochrome feel modern, polished, and effortless, too.

At Bottega Veneta, Versace, and Max Mara the monochrome looks weren’t limited to ready-to-wear, either. Same-hued outfits were paired with bags, shoes, and outerwear in the same color palette.

At Courrèges, even the baseball caps corresponded to the canary yellow ready-to-wear. At Bottega, Kelly green bags and shoes punctuated green outfits. At Alexandre Vauthier, a lime green satin dress was accessorized with boots in the same fabric.

In recent years, monochrome was embraced when done in neutral tones. And while all-out beiges and khakis aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, the runways just proved that saturated primary colors and cool neons are just as viable worn head-to-toe.
