16-Year-Old Boy Dies in Grisly Freak Accident During PE Class

Sadly, a 16-year-old student at Cheney High School died in a freak accident during a physical education class on April 27. The high school sophomore, Brayden Bahme, reportedly fell into a goal post on a field at school and was impaled through the eye while running, Cheney Fire Chief Tom Jenkins confirmed, according to KREM 2. The teen was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The school responded to the accident saying that it would offer counseling to its staff and students following this heartbreaking incident, according to the Belleville News.

Cheney Public Schools Superintendent Ben Ferney released a statement noting that Bahme’s injuries took place on April 27 during a fourth-period physical education class, according to KREM 2.

Firefighters responded about 2 p.m. per the Belleville News-Democrat, and reportedly took the teen to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Cheney Public Schools released the following statement noting that counseling would be available to its staff and students following Bahme’s devastating death:

“While it is important to allow all the opportunity to experience grief, it is also important to maintain as normal a routine as possible regarding school activities. There may be a variety of reactions to the unforeseen loss of Brayden and reactions to loss do not have a timeline. Students and staff needing support will have access to counselors as needed. If you feel you or your child are in need of support from one of our counselors, please do not hesitate to call the counseling center at your school.”

In a Facebook Post, Cheney High School announced that a vigil will take place at 6 p.m. on May 1. The school asked attendees to wear blue and to bring a candle. The teen loved fishing, so its officials also asked for fishing gear to be brought to the vigil that will be donated in his honor to local youths who also enjoy the hobby.

fundraiser page was organized for the teen’s family by Holly Lytle, and a message was shared from the family.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye to Brayden. Our entire family appreciates the outreach of support,” the page reads. “This go-fund-me will be used to take care of Brayden’s final burial arrangements and the immediate needs of the family. All remaining funds will be used for a youth fishing program in honor of Brayden ‘fish pockets’ Bahme.” The fundraiser has exceeded its $10,000 goal and so far, with more than $27,000 raised thus far.
