CDC simplifies COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, Virginia implements immediately

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released new recommendations that the Virginia Health Department (VDH) is immediately putting into practice with reference to the COVID-19 vaccine.

The CDC published streamlined COVID-19 vaccination recommendations on April 19 that now let those who are more likely to have the severe illness get an optional extra dose of the bivalent mRNA vaccine.

Bivalent mRNA vaccines manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech will be used in Virginia for all COVID-19 vaccinations, and a streamlined administration schedule will be followed.

Young children who have finished their main immunization series, older children, teenagers, and adults under the age of 65 who have not yet had a bivalent mRNA vaccine dose are all eligible to receive a single dose of the vaccine under this streamlined schedule.

People with reduced immunity, adults 65 years of age and older, and young children who haven’t finished their main series are among the groups that may get two or more bivalent mRNA doses.

There are no approved bivalent vaccinations at this time, but Johnson & Johnson/Janssen and Novavax will continue to provide them in their existing forms and on their current schedules.

You may visit the Vaccinate Virginia website or get in touch with the VDH Call Center if you’re interested in receiving a free bivalent mRNA vaccination. Call 7-1-1 or 877-VAX-IN-VA from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday (TTY users can dial 877-829-4682).

English, Spanish, and more than a hundred other languages are all spoken. There can be a delay in the availability of the bivalent mRNA vaccination from sources but check back in a few days.
