The driving force behind this initiative is SWAIA’s vision to create a platform for Indigenous designers and artists who have often been overshadowed by the dominance of the American fashion empire. By fostering this Fashion Week, SWAIA aims to uplift and promote the diverse and exceptional talents within Indigenous communities.
The ultimate goal is to establish Santa Fe as a global destination for Indigenous Fashion, a hub where creativity and cultural heritage blend seamlessly.
Having already reached its 101st-year milestone, SWAIA is a distinguished organization renowned for hosting the annual Santa Fe Indian Market. This iconic event has previously included the Indigenous Fashion Show, a precursor to the upcoming Indigenous Fashion Week, now set to soar to new heights.
Behind the scenes, the event is in the capable hands of curator and art historian, Amber-Dawn Bear Robe. Reflecting on the humble beginnings of SWAIA’s Indigenous Fashion Show back in 2014, Amber-Dawn recalls the resilience and resourcefulness that launched this inspiring journey. With sheer determination, the show took off with minimal resources – a testament to the passion and dedication of all involved.
As anticipation builds, Santa Fe Indigenous Fashion Week promises to be a cultural spectacle, a tribute to the rich artistic expressions of Indigenous designers, and a resounding celebration of their invaluable contributions to the world of fashion.
