A new documentary is about to be released about the most powerful woman in fashion, Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of American Vogue. The documentary has Anna’s approval and provides perhaps the only live, actual footage of a ‘nuclear’ Wintour. The documentary, shot over nine months at the Vogue offices, followed Wintour and her staff as they prepared the year’s biggest issue. It is directed by R.J. Cutler.

Anna Wintour decides by a glance or a grimace whether blue is the new black or jackets are the new coats. In the documentary, Anna pours over the layout of Vogue’s September issue with her staff, telling them in no uncertain terms that the color scheme they labored over is reminiscent of an Easter egg.

One of her former assistants wrote The Devil Wears Prada, a novel set in the offices of a glossy magazine and featuring a tyrannical boss. The film version starring Meryl Streep as the ruthless editor was believed to be an exaggerated version of Wintour. But after the documentary no one would believe there is any exaggeration.

Anna Wintour had a difficult time watching herself in the magazine’s documentary, The September Issue.

"It’s hard to look at yourself when you’re used to being on the other end of the camera," Wintour said. "But I think people will enjoy it."

“The September Issue” was among the nominees for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The film opens in theaters in September.
